Restoration-of-rights procedures are another way of mitigating the adverse consequences of a criminal conviction. Under some state statutes, some or all of the rights lost because of a criminal conviction are restored automatically upon the occurrence of a specified event, such as the end of incarceration or the completion of a criminal sentence. In other states, these rights are restored only upon the application of the person whose rights were taken away. Whatever the exact mechanism for the restoration of rights, one of their limitations is that individuals whose rights have been restored still may have to disclose their criminal convictions when asked about them by prospective employers, thereby diminishing their chances of obtaining employment.
